ABOUT
Traxport is a special purpose vehicle established to obtain and operate a freight service between the southern port city of Lagos, Nigeria and the northern industrial city of Kano.

The service is proposed to operate on a recently refurbished 1500 kilometre narrow gauge (1,067 mm (3 ft 6in) rail line. The refurbishment is being handled by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

Traxport is currently primarily promoted by Broadview Worldwide Ltd and Bursbeg Nigeria Ltd, who currently each own 50% of the shares.

THE PROJECT
With the deterioration of the railway service over many years, virtually all freight movements are by trucks as shown by the rail freight table below:
1964
2,960,00
freight tonnes
1974
1,098,000
freight tonnes
2010
<100,000
freight tonnes

The potentials for cargo are large as the existing road network is dilapidated and prone to delays.

The South (principally Lagos) is the gateway to most of the imports into Nigeria. Lagos and South West Nigeria is also responsible for 60% of manufacturing capacity

Conversely, the North is the agricultural heartland of Nigeria producing 80% of the food consumed in the South as well as valuable export crops like cotton, gum arabic, sesame and ginger.
TYPICAL CUSTOMER PROFILE
BROAD STRATEGY
The broad strategy would be to provide a mix of rolling stock and engines dedicated to moving freight northwards and southwards.
The ideal strategy would be to deploy intermodal units to speed up onward transfers from the train terminals to end-users.

This will be done using a narrow-gauge line.
