Traxport Rail Services Engages Climate Focus to Support Development of Low-Carbon Lagos–KanoFreight Corridor

Traxport Rail Services Ltd is pleased to announce the engagement of Climate Focus, an international climate policy and carbon markets advisory firm, to provide specialist support for the development of the carbon programme associated with Traxport’s proposed Lagos–Kano Low-Carbon Freight Corridor Transition Programme.

The Traxport project is being developed as a dedicated freight rail service connecting Lagos with Kano over approximately 1,500 kilometres of Nigeria’s existing narrow-gauge rail corridor, working with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other technical, financial and industry partners.

Under the assignment, Climate Focus will support Traxport with the revision and strengthening of the project’s Project Design Document (PDD) in line with the applicable Verra framework, including application of the AM0090 methodology to define the project boundary, baseline and project scenarios, key assumptions and monitoring parameters.

The work will also include development of an ex-ante greenhouse-gas emission-reduction calculation framework, preparation for the subsequent validation and verification process, and support for the preparation of materials for engagement with relevant project stakeholders.

This assignment represents another important step in Traxport’s work to establish a credible measurement, reporting and verification framework around the potential climate benefits of shifting freight from road to rail and deploying lower-carbon rail technologies.

Traxport intends to engage constructively with the Government of Nigeria, including the relevant Designated National Authority, prospective financing institutions, industry partners and other stakeholders as the carbon programme and wider rail project develop.

The Climate Focus assignment relates specifically to technical development of the carbon programme and associated engagement materials. Traxport will continue to lead its engagements with Nigerian governmental authorities, investors and other project stakeholders.
